I’m a composer, singer and producer who is based in Glasgow, Scotland and originally from Seoul, South Korea.
I translate diverse experiences that flow into my life into music - thoughts, emotions from relationships with people, literature, physiology, nature, history etc (anything that leaves meaningful impact in me positively/negatively!) - but ultimately I hope to write music that brings the audience to the place where they can mutually understand through their lives.
Musically, my pieces tend to explore textural and timbral possibilities through notational and electronic writing. And my background in solo singing and choral singing tradition motivates me in search for convincing melodies. Appreciation of diverse music tradition beyond the Western Classical Music - Electronics, Jazz, Rock and Korean pop songs from the 90s - also moulded my compositional practice.
“Seyoung Oh with her evocative impression of the disused Botanic Gardens rail station in the city. …this was a first performance that demanded further outings, the Seoul-born composer bringing a forensic outside eye to the culture of the city.”
- Written by Keith Bruce on the premiere of ‘The platform vividly echoes’ by Scottish Ensemble
Premiere performance by the Hebrides Ensemble and Soprano Stephanie Lamprea.
